Create Your Own Calm Kit

Create Your Own Calm Kit

When emotions feel big — anxious, overwhelmed, low — it’s hard to think clearly about what might help. Sometimes not being able to settle on an answer can intensify how you're feeling and start a spiral.

That’s why having a calm kit for emotional regulation ready in advance can be a great  gift to set up for your future self.

A calm kit is simply a small collection of comforting, grounding, creative tools you can reach for when you’re not feeling your best. Tried and tested methods that you know work for you, and you can have confidence in when you need it.

Think of it like a first-aid kit. But for emotions, because when you’re already overwhelmed, decision-making is the last thing you need. Instead, you just open the box and begin.

As a starting suggestion, your kit could include four categories:

Sensory

  • Favourite tea
  • Soft blanket
  • Scented oil
  • Smooth stone or shell

Creative

  • Small sketchbook
  • Coloured pencils
  • Washi tape
  • Collage scraps

Grounding

  • Breathing prompts
  • Affirmations
  • A short playlist
  • Nature photos

Comforting

  • A letter to yourself
  • Favourite poem
  • Chocolate
  • Cosy socks

Nothing fancy. Nothing expensive. Just things that help you soften, calm and let go. Things that you can rely on to deliver something, be it a familiar sensation, or an avenue to vent and process.

You might keep everything in a small tin, pouch, or box by your bed or desk. Just sat there quietly waiting, ready for whenever you need it.

When a tough day hits, get comfortable with a set of thick socks and your favourite cup of tea. Take a moment to connect with and appreciate those sensations. Then, choose one small action: colour a page, make a collage, write three sentences. A little something.

Creative movement helps emotions shift instead of staying stuck. It can help change perspective rather than cycling round the same frustrations.

It’s not about fixing everything. It’s about creating a moment of safety, where you can be however you need to be.

If you enjoy using art for emotional wellbeing, you could even add printed mood trackers or simple worksheets to your kit — little tools that guide you when your brain feels foggy. If you're anything like me, sometimes you might not know what you're feeling until you start exploring it with words or imagery.

Building a calm kit is an act of care. A quiet way of saying: “I’ve got you." Just knowing it's there can have a positive effect before you've even needed to use it.

Create Your Own Calm Kit. A wonderful act of self care.

And when you’re exploring creative tools for mental health or gentle self-soothing practices, this simple little act might become one of the kindest and more effective ones you can get.
